Sheboygan is known as the "Malibu of the Midwest" because of its status as a freshwater haven, excellent places to go fishing or boating, and wide range of outdoor activities to choose from. The area known today as Sheboygan was originally home to Native Americans prior to the settlement by Europeans in the 1780s. Sheboygan, WI is the principal city of the Sheboygan, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area, situated just 50 miles north of Milwaukee and 64 miles south of Green Bay. Located on the western shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Sheboygan River, Sheboygan, Wisconsin is a city in and the county seat of Sheboygan County.
