He rumbles around the house, finds papers with John's bonus on it, decides to write a ransom note with the intention to abduct her and hides in the basement until the family returns home and turns out for bed. Personally, I don't fall into any one camp on who did it.Ī sadistic individual who knew the family breaks into the house through the basement window during the day while the family is out at their Christmas party. That's why proper scenes of crime procedures are so important in the first place. What might that evidence have revealed had it been collected? We will never know. There was almost certainly voluminous additional evidence which was never recovered, or was destroyed or contaminated beyond use in the course of Christmas morning 1996. The crime scene was shockingly mishandled. I understand that the theory Burke did it is attractive, because it does seem to fit the evidence that we know of - but that is all we know of. The other point I would make is that "a victim can only be killed once but a crime scene can be murdered a thousand times". The other issue is that the massive inconsistencies in the Ramsey's stories are then used to attack.Burke, as opposed to, y'know the people who are very likely telling a pack of lies over the death of their daughter. His strange, awkward physicality, his bizarre affect - all of these seem equally consistent with growing up in the eye of a media cyclone, with strange parents, after your sister was murdered in suspicious circumstances. My issue with the "it was Burke" theory is that Burke would probably grow up odd if he was innocent anyway, so extrapolating from his Dr Phil appearance doesn't seem all that credible.
